An original oil pastel mini-painting, hand-painted by Kristin
Vanderlip.
This oil pastel mini was painted en plein air on a beach in Half Moon Bay, California. Soft, horizontal strokes of pastel trace the emergence of blue sky over a sea of grays, teals, and blues—capturing a moment of stillness and movement, of shaping and being shaped. Along the right outer edge, thick, textured strokes of white appear, representing the parts of life yet to be shaped.
“The Shaping of a Life” takes its name from Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s memoir Gift from the Sea, where she reflects on her time by the ocean and the quiet forces that form a life.
Please note: The colors displayed may vary due to differences in screen settings, lighting conditions during photography, and individual display devices. The artwork may appear slightly different in person.
