Quiet Assurance: Meditations on Peace for a Grieving Heart by Thelma Nienhuis

I had the privilege of reading through some of Thelma words before this book came to be, and since it’s arrived in my hands, I’ve returned to it, not as a fellow writer or editor, but as a fellow human in need of some quiet assurance and meditations on peace for my grieving heart this season.

As I grieve the recent loss of our dog and companion for the past 12.5 years, Opie, and move through the mother’s grief that ebbs and flows with celebrating another of my daughter’s birthdays without her, Thelma’s words have ministered to me, pointing me towards Truth.

If you’re looking for some peace this Christmas season, I highly recommend Thelma’s gently written book and believe the Lord will meet you in these pages.

The prayer at the end gets me every time and I return to it again and again. Here’s a small snippet:

Carve into my sorrow-filled heart the truth Immanuel — God with us.

When joy slips in to surprise, remind me how grief and joy hold hands.

THELMA NIENHUIS

This book is a short read, containing 30 meditations drawing from the Psalms, welcoming your pain and inviting you into lament.

You can hear more from Thelma about Quiet Assurance and listen to her read this lovely prayer in its entirety in my interview with her saved to my IGTV which you can find here.
